I wrote “Is Daddy Coming Back in a Minute?” and “What Happened to Daddy’s Body?” after I was widowed, very suddenly, in April 2009, aged only 34. Martin, my husband, suffered a totally unexpected heart attack while away with our son Alex, then aged three. Alex somehow managed to get an ambulance, but sadly, Martin died at the scene. This was only four days before our daughter Olivia’s first birthday. He was also 34. I never got to say goodbye.
When I looked for books to explain to my very young children what had happened, I found none. I vowed to write my own.
Originally self-published with the help of crowdfunding in 2012 and 2014 respectively, both books were taken on by Jessica Kingsley Publishing in 2016.
In May 2010, I met John and his five children. We fell in love, and, despite lots of emotional upheaval, a year and a half later, we moved together.
But in March 2012, when Olivia was only three and Alex six, I was diagnosed with a very active breast cancer. Again, our life changed beyond recognition. I was 37, and within weeks I had started chemotherapy. I was more scared than I have ever been before. It was during chemo that I crowdfunded “Is Daddy Coming Back in a Minute?”, and was completely overwhelmed and humbled by your amazing support.
The book went to print the same week I successfully finished my treatment – chemo, surgery and radiotherapy – in November 2012. So far, all is looking good. I will need to continue hormone treatment for several years to come, and have regular check ups. Fingers crossed.
John and I got married in July 2014, and our seven kids – Jodie, Lauren, Nicole, Alex, Leanna, Rhiana and Olivia, are currently aged 8 to 20. Last year we rescued two dogs. We must be crazy.
